Q&A with Salina South’s Elena Herbel – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by WSU Tech

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My goal for the year is to continue to excel in the classroom and prepare for college to the best of my ability.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

Going as a team to Nebraska for basketball camp. It was fun to go out and play together and to do a bunch of small activities together.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. Colton. He was my study hall teacher for two years and is a girls basketball coach. Mr. Colton has always helped me when I needed it, and he pushes me to succeed in class and on the court.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite basketball memory is when we defeated a very skillful Maize team as the underdog on senior night last year.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

A teammate who has left a big impression on me is Mariah Janda. She helped me to see that it is important to have fun but also try your best at all times. Mariah also set a great example for how to be a great team player and to cheer others on for their personal success.

VYPE: What is your favorite part about being on this team?

My favorite part about being on this team is that, even when things are not going our way, everyone is still trying their best with a positive attitude. I like that we are all able to have a good time with each other and still compete.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take
with you?

If I could go anywhere for a vacation, I would want to go to Europe to visit tourist attractions. I would like to go with a small group of friends.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it all in the next 24 hours, what would you
spend it on?

If I was given 24 hours to spend $500, I would spend it on sweatshirts, shoes, and food.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I donated blood at the school’s blood drive.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved in and why?

I am part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at school because it is a fun way to get out of the classroom and to meet new people who are willing to support and help you out.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society,
Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I am a member of the National Honor Society.
