Q&A with Salina South’s Layson Sajdak – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by WSU Tech

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

For football this year, I want to do as much as I can to win games for my team. If that’s scoring touchdowns, or blocking well for our run game. Making the plays that my coaches know I can make in order for us to succeed on the field.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun I’ve had in the last year was going on vacation to Destin, Florida. I’m a huge ocean and beach guy, so it’s always fun going to places like that. I like to surf, so that’s what I spent most of my time doing, while being able to hangout with my family.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

My favorite teacher growing up was my 8th grade math teacher Mr. McCorkle. He was my football coach, so we were already pretty close. His class was fun everyday, and he knew how to balance having fun but also getting the school work done that was needed. He was a teacher you could talk to about anything school or non school related.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory has to be when I won the state championship in wrestling when I was in 3rd grade. Before I started playing basketball, I was a really good wrestler. My last year I went 41-2 and won the 8u state championship. My best friend and wrestling partner Seth Flores also won that year so that was also really cool.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

One of my closest friends and teammates Ian Andalon-Silva. Last season he was dealing with back pain but continued to battle through it and put it all on the line for his team’s success. He pushed me to keep working hard and think about the team instead of yourself.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

Me and my teammates are really close to each other on and off the field. I think this helps with how we perform on the field and how we have learned to trust each other. Having a team full of people you can trust, and have a good time with is a blessing.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you
take with you?

I would choose to visit Lucky Beach, Australia. This has been one of my dream places I have always wanted to visit and surf at. I would bring my parents and my oldest brother. Those are the people I’m closest with and would enjoy my time with the most.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you
spend it on?

I would spend it on clothes and Chick-fil-a. Any chance I get I buy some new clothes, and most of the time I am eating Chick-fil-a.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I volunteer here and there at our local nursing home, Pinnacle Park.
