Q&A with Salina South’s Josten Fischer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Stardust Trophy

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
I am hoping to make it to state for cross country this year. For soccer, I really just want to get closer
to the other girls on the team and enjoy my last season. Outside of sports, I’m just trying to make the most of my senior year and spend more time with my classmates.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
I recently went to a Zach Bryan concert with one of my friends and that was really fun.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher is Mr. Carlson. I had him as my Macroeconomics teacher freshman year and my
American Justice teacher my junior year. He has the ability to make boring or complex lessons really easy
to digest and always kept me engaged in class. He is one of those teachers that you can tell truly wants
his students to learn and succeed, and he always makes an effort to provide an answer for any question.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
Rides home in the Suburbans are always fun, especially with the soccer girls.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
I think that my sister left the biggest impact on me. She was one of the captains for both cross country
and soccer when I was a freshman, and she always kept an encouraging attitude towards her teammates. She showed me that being a leader is bigger than having the most goals or running the
fastest times and that, instead, the most important part of leading is maintaining a positive environment
and lifting others up.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
I really love my coaches. They’re really relaxed and easy to get along with, but they will always push
everyone to be the best versions of themselves. I also think that the team itself is different from any other
sport. Cross country is kind of weird because while it’s an individual sport and you are running for your
own placement; you also have a group of people depending on you to give your best performance. I
wouldn’t be able to show up and run every day on my own, so having a community of peers that can
relate to mental blocks or struggles and still encourage each other to finish the workouts is really special.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you
take with you?

I would go to Morrison, Colorado, and I would bring a few of my friends with me. I prefer mountains to the
beach, and Morrison is where the Red Rocks Amphitheater is, which always has really good concerts
lined up. A concert and a hike with friends is my ideal day.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you
spend it on?

I’d probably buy multiple gift cards to different stores. I’m indecisive whenever I buy clothes, and I feel like under the time limit I would definitely make some regrettable purchases.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
I currently help out with Prairieland Market. I deliver produce subscriptions to a few of their customers and have also helped prep food for them.
