Recently, VYPE had the privilege to talk to and to find out more about Salina South High School athlete Isabel Fulkerson.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
Fulkerson: My personal goal for the golf season this year was to play bogey golf or better at tournaments.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
Fulkerson: The most fun I have during golf season is on the car ride home after a tournament. I love being able to talk with my teammates and coach about the tournament or about what is going on in our lives.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
Fulkerson: My favorite teacher is Mr. Carlson. My freshman year I took Economics, and currently I am taking American Justice taught by him. I love social studies classes, and his lectures are interesting.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
Fulkerson: My favorite specific athletic memory is qualifying for the state tournament with the team my sophomore year. I was super excited to play at state and proud of what our team had accomplished. Overall my favorite athletic memory is just looking back at how far I have come. Before my freshman year I had never touched a golf club, but now I am playing better than I thought possible. I placed 12th at our league tournament and qualified for the 2nd all league team.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
Fulkerson: Maddison Durr has left the biggest impression on me. She is a junior this season, but she has been playing golf her whole life. It is fun to go out and play with her because she is so skilled.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
Fulkerson: My favorite part of being on the golf team is that, since our team is small, it feels like a family. I love talking with my teammates at practice.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
Fulkerson: If I could go anywhere for a summer vacation I would go to Italy and Greece. I would bring my family and friends.
VYPE: If we gave you $5000 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
Fulkerson: If I had $5,000 to spend, I would book my vacation to Italy and Greece and put the rest into my savings account.
VYPE: What other sports, activities, or community service projects do you participate in, and how have these helped to prepare you for the future?
Fulkerson: When I am not in the golf season I swim competitively for my local club (Salina Aquatics Club) or for my high school team. I also play the flute and sing in the high school’s select Choir. I volunteer my time at the Salina Public Library, and I also help out with all of the high school boys’ swim meets. My extracurricular activities prepared me for my future because they taught me time management skills.
