Q&A with Salina Sacred Hearts Mike Matteucci – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Kaniper Agency

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

My personal goals this year are to finish the school year with a 4.0 G.P.A., compete well in all of my school sports, and win 2A state golf.

VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?

The most fun I have had in the past year was when my grandpa took me and a couple of my friends to go watch the PGA Championship in Oklahoma.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?

Mr. Gormley, our basketball coach, is my favorite teacher. He is my favorite teacher because he always keeps the class entertained with his jokes. He also keeps everybody in the class involved.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athletic memory is when I hit my first hole-in-one at Stagg Hill Golf Course. What made it even better was, at first, I didn’t know the ball went into the hole.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

I would say that Caleb Gilliland, who graduated in the class of ’21, has left the biggest impression on me. In every sport I played with him, he would always push me to do my best and encourage me when I was not performing at my best.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part about being on this team is the friendships. My class has been playing basketball with each other since we were as little as we can remember. Because we have known each other for so long, we work together well, which helps on the basketball court.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?

I would probably choose to go somewhere in Colorado. I would bring my brother and my dad. I would choose Colorado because I enjoy the mountains, and golfing in the mountains is one of the coolest experiences.

VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?

If I was given $500 dollars and had to spend it in the next 24 hours, I would probably buy a few new golf wedges for about $300, and the rest of the money would go toward food and some new shoes.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I am a part of the Junior Civitan group at our school, which does community service projects in the city. In our most recent one, we picked up trash throughout Indian Rock.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

I am involved in the Chess Club. I like this club because I like to play chess and it is a time when my friends and I can leave class for a little to play a competitive game of chess. I am also a part of the Culture Club. This club is fun because once a month you get to learn about a new county and its cultures.

VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?

I am a junior leader at our school. The leadership group at our school has to plan activities throughout the school year for the students to participate in.
