Salina Central’s Hunter Mowery – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by The Alley

By: Angela Brunk

Athletes feel the impact of senior team leaders, and senior Hunter Mowery is ready to step up to this leadership role. “As a senior, my leadership role significantly increases, and it’s important that I use this opportunity to have a bigger impact on my team.”

Mowery is always up for a good challenge. “The game against our cross town rivals is always my favorite one of the season.” Known as The Mayor’s Cup, it is the matchup between Salina Central and Salina South. Besides the state championship, this is the game Mowery is looking forward to most.

In addition to his new leadership role, Mowery has been working on increasing his skill set. As a wide receiver, Mowery knew increasing his top speed is where he needed to put more focus. “I’ve always been able to lose DB’s with my lateral movement and IQ, but increasing my top speed would create more separation, making it easier for my QB to lay it in.” Mowery has been spending extra time in a local gym increasing his speed and agility through hill sprints and cone drills.

Football season won’t be the end of athletics for this senior. He will finish out the year competing as a Mustang in basketball and then in track and field where he will compete in the hurdles and javelin throw. After graduation, Mowery would love to play football at the collegiate level which also offers a biology or pre med program. He is currently looking in the future toward radiology.
