Salina South’s Campbell Peterson – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by The Alley

Senior from Salina South Campbell Peterson has set big goals for this fall season of cross country. He not only set a person time goal for himself, but also has set a goal for the team to reach. “My goals are to run under 18:00 in the 5k and qualify for state as a team.” With regionals for cross country being held mid-October, the team has several more weeks to prepare for the big races.

With Peterson’s goal set for under 18:00 minutes, his time spent in the off season to prepare should help him reach a sub 18:00 minute 5k. “I ran with my team three times a week along with a couple other times on my own each week.” Peterson told VYPE his personal best time for the 5k last year was 19:14. He was
really proud of this time because he struggled most of the season to get his time under 20:00 minutes.

After visiting with Peterson about his personal goal, VYPE learned more about his team goal of reaching state. Peterson stated the race he is most looking forward to is regionals. “I am looking forward to the regionals race because that is where it matters most to qualify for state.” For Salina South to qualify for the state meet at regionals, they must place within the top three teams at their regional site.

Other than cross county, Peterson participates in bowling during the winter season. After graduation this spring, Peterson is going to attend Barton County Community College.
