Salina south’s boys’ soccer team has a rising star in their sophomore Damon McDonald. Last season as a freshman, McDonald was a starter for 5A The Cougars. An achievement McDonald is sure to be proud of. Last season he was also named AVCTL All League Honorable Mention for defender. As a defender,
McDonald has set a goal to have no goals conceded because of him for the rest of the season.
McDonald is looking forward to playing Maize South again as well as playing at state. Making the state competition is a team goal McDonald has set for this season. To help his team achieve this goal, McDonald has been working hard in the off season. “I enjoy practicing and scrimmaging with college age players. I spend time in the gym working on explosive power and also train one on one, as often as possible with a personal trainer, for footwork and technical ability.”
When not playing soccer, McDonald keeps a very full schedule. For the Cougar Marching Band, McDonald plays the alto saxophone. During the winter season, McDonald can be found in the pool on the swimming and diving team. He is actively involved in his church youth group, and during the summer months he helps with his dad’s landscaping business.
Other soccer activities McDonald is involved in are a club soccer team called the Kansas City Surf and Premier soccer with Manhattan Surf. He also is a ref for the Salina Parks and Rec. For the future, McDonald would like to play soccer for a division 1 school and then hopefully have the opportunity to play soccer professionally.
